Main Street Martial Arts (a program of the Kids' Action League of Martial Artists, Inc. 501(c) (3)) is a nonprofit organization providing physical fitness programs to Children, Teens, and Adults in the field of the martial arts (Samurai Training Arts, Aikido, Aiki-Sword, Aiki-Staff, Aiki-Jiujutsu, IaiJutsu, JoJutsu, Zazen, Go, Shotokan Karate-Do, Olympic Taekwon-Do, Shaolin Kung Fu, Tai Chi, Classical Japanese Swordsmanship, and Yoga as well as Zen/Budo), which is well known to promote confidence, focus, appreciation, inspiration, and integrity among its practitioners. We believe that our clients become the finest students at school and the most successful owners and employees of businesses, as well as being among the most well-respected members of the community.
We offer introductory programs to adults and to children, and provide scholarships for those children and their families who cannot easily afford our tuition. Main Street Martial Arts is the place for beginners to try, experience, and enjoy martial arts in a welcoming and supportive environment. Remember that every true Black Belt was once a white belt student who never stopped practicing!
Traditional Aikikai Aikido is recommended for students ages 6 - 11 and in our Aikido Team and The Ultimate After-School Youth Leadership Programs. We recommend that student ages 4-5 participate with their families in the Family Martial Arts Aikido program. For students ages 12-17 we recommend an interview with the instructor for admission to the Adults Program. Adults ages 18 and up are welcome to make an appointment for a free trial program class and join in any of our Traditional programs.

All students practice at their own pace while working together to help each other learn.
Aikido is a Japanese Martial Art of Self-Defense that is easy to do and yet challenging enough to provide a moderate level of exercise for health benefits. As you advance in your skills, you'll be able to practice a little faster for an even more exciting and vigorous workout.
Aikido: The Peaceful Martial Art
The idea of a peaceful martial art seems at first to be paradoxical and self-contradictory. But in this respect, Aikido is perhaps the most unique and beautiful of all the martial arts: it is defensive and non-aggressive both in its philosophy and techniques, yet incredibly versatile and practical.
Aikidoists do not try to initiate attacks, win fights, or defeat opponents. Instead, they seek to control and neutralize any threats not through sheer physical strength, but rather through flowing circular motions that blend with the energy of an attack and redirect that energy back through the attacker.
Instead of directly controlling an attack, the techniques of Aikido are designed to harmonize with the power and direction of the attack and convert it into a force that will unbalance the attacker and render him or her helpless. Attacks are then neutralized by the use of various compliant wristlocks and arm pins, rather than through aggressive kicks or blows.
Aikido: The Way of Harmony and Peaceful Spirit
The Japanese word "Aikido" is made up of three characters: Ai, Ki, and Do. Ai means to join, unify, or harmonize. Ki means energy or spirit, particularly a universal life force, essence, or the forces of nature. Do means a path or way of life, and signifies that Aikido involves not only self-defense techniques, but also positive character-building ideals, which a person can incorporate into his or her life. Taken together, the three characters mean "The Way of Harmony with the Spirit of the Universe."

Aikido: Family Martial Arts (Ages 3 and Up): Our Family Martial Arts classes are a unique offering in the world of martial arts, yet bring us back to the original purpose of martial arts, and that is for family protection and well-being. Many self-proclaimed "modern" martial arts and sports martial arts with their emphasis on destroying others and "quick and easy" methodology do nothing for character development of children and have no purpose in true modern family values. Families need a safe and healthy environment where they can train together, develop skills, build character, share strategies of defense, and develop and incomparable bond. Main Street Martial Arts provides this atmosphere and instructional pedagogy for all families to practice and grow together. As Aikido - Eastside is a traditional martial arts school that is not focused on competition against others, point-fighting, or on tournaments, we get back to the original purpose of martial arts, which was to practice with family members in order to pass on essential core values, protection, and resoluteness of character to the next generation. Join your child in our family practices and build an incomparable bond with your son or daughter.
Aikido Team: The Ultimate Afterschool Program (Ages 6 and Up): Our Ultimate After-School Youth Leadership Program and Aikido Team meets on a year-round basis from 2:30PM-6:30PM daily. Fundamental movements and intensity of practice are emphasized in the study of weapons. Wooden weapons are used to symbolize real weapons while providing a safe learning environment for students of all ages.
Aikido: Black Belt Club (Ages 6 and Up): Extended Semi-Private Lessons/Extra Practice Times for Black Belt Club Members. Black Belt Club classes help students to focus their practice by working in supervised peer groups toward test requirements.
